You’ll see national powerhouses like Chaminade-Madonna, St. John Bosco, Bishop Gorman, and IMG Academy competing in high-stakes games broadcast to the nation. This is no longer just a local pastime; it is a burgeoning business where a high schooler’s career can be forged. This is the new world we live in, and for a family with a dedicated student-athlete, understanding how to navigate this system the correct way is more critical than ever.

The ultimate goal for many is a college scholarship, but the landscape is shifting seismically. The NCAA transfer portal has created unprecedented competition, making the right high school choice a pivotal, life-altering decision. This is why the pathway to and through high school must be a strategic one. For the right student-athlete, this means exploring opportunities to matriculate to elite powerhouse schools. These can be private boarding schools that immerse students in a 24/7 culture of excellence, or private day schools with established host family situations, providing a superior education and a transformative environment.

In this new era, a student-athlete must be viewed as a good business decision for the institution that recruits them. It is a synthesis of high-level aptitude on the field and proven dedication in the classroom. The schools that play a national schedule, from St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia to St. Frances Academy in Baltimore to public juggernauts like Duncanville in Texas, are making calculated investments in young men they believe will succeed. They need students who have the support to thrive academically, ensuring they are not just eligible, but are true assets to the school’s reputation.

However, we want all student-athletes to win, and winning means finding the right situation for your specific journey. The national powerhouses are one path, but they are not the only one. Excellent local school environments exist all around the country—programs that may not have a television contract but do a phenomenal job of preparing students for the next level. You can absolutely achieve your dreams of playing college football—at any level—from these programs.

What is universal, whether at a boarding school or the local high school, is the demand for a true partnership between the family, the school, and the coaches. It requires a commitment to being a complete student-athlete, engaging in extra activities that build character and broaden horizons. The goal is always college readiness, on and off the field.
